A review of malaria epidemiology and control in Papua New Guinea 1900 to 2021: Progress made and future directions

The research and control of malaria has a long history in Papua New Guinea, sometimes resulting substantial changes to the distribution infection transmission dynamics country. There have been four major periods PNG, with current programme having commenced 2004. Each previous was successful reducing burden country, but multiple factors led failures eventual breakdown. A comprehensive review literature dating from 1900 2021 undertaken summarize strategies, epidemiology, vector ecology environmental drivers PNG. Evaluations historical programs reveal poor planning communication, difficulty sustaining financial investment once had decreased as common themes breakdown programs. Success future PNG is contingent on adequate management programs, effective communication engagement at-risk populations, cohesive targeted approaches sub-national national elimination.
